BC Report

June 2010

Greeting from BC!

My first year as the BC Councillor has been hectic to say the least. Our Chapter has been busy each month this past year with the exception of February due to the Olympics. We were able to provide four evening educational sessions in addition to two planning/social meetings at various hospitals throughout the Lower Mainland Region. Our chapter also held a day-long educational seminar at Royal Columbian Hospital this past April for health care providers entitled Stroke—The New Epidemic. The morning included a review of brain/body anatomy and the various types of stroke followed by the medical and interventional treatments for stroke. The afternoon was dedicated to the BC Stroke Strategy and how it is being implemented in a number of our Health Authorities. The program was well received and allowed for some major networking. We have seen the growth of our chapter this year with the addition of a few new members and hope to continue this growth with our on-going recruitment throughout the year.

This past January I had the opportunity to attend my first Mid-year meeting in Montreal as a Councillor. Now I truly know what a solid -14°C temperature feels like! I even learned what a scarf is really for! While I sat around the table at Mid-year with the directors and other councillors I felt so inspired! Years of hard work and dedication in our Association from so many great members in the past had produced this articulate, serious, self sufficient, caring association of Canadian Neuroscience Nurses. I truly came away with a greater appreciation for those nurses from across Canada who had a part in shaping this amazing Association. Thank you to all the board members for making me feel so welcomed at my first Mid-year.

While our BC chapter will continue to provide neuroscience educational sessions in the coming year, much of our attention will focus on the CANN AGM and Scientific Sessions slated for Vancouver in June 2011. This will be our third time hosting the national conference in nine years so we come with some experience. Our team of Chairs and volunteers is being assembled and we look forward to the challenge.

Respectfully submitted,
Brenda MacLeod
