Legislation and Bylaws / Past President Report
May 2007
This marks my last official report to CANN. My first report was submitted 6 years ago when I represented NB/PEI as councillor, a position I held for 3 years and this last report marks the end of a 3 year term on the executive. I promise not to wax poetic. My first reports were submitted to AXON and at present we submit only online.
This year has been hectic to say the least; the nominations segment of this position experienced a unique situation where almost all of the portfolio positions and half of the councillor positions and executive would be vacant. Hopefully I will present a complete slate in my report at the AGM, just have some last minute arm twisting (truly just kidding). I wish to give my sincere thanks to those who stepped up; you will work hard but also have lots of fun and make many good friends. The new board members are a stellar crew. For any persons considering joining CANN in a more active role such as councillor or portfolio position, it truly is a great way to become acquainted with neuro nurses across the country. It gives me significant comfort to know that if anything should happen to anyone I love at any neuro centre in the country I know at least one person I can call. I also know the nationwide competence of neuro nurses and am comforted as well.
With respect to legislation and bylaws we have made the move to create our binder wholly on CD. This effort was initiated by Jeanne Evans and Diane Duff last year. This single action makes revisions simpler and ensuring that everyone has an up to date manual a snap. I am sure those who were responsible for updating the administrative manual in the past know what a headache and impossible task that was. As it stands now each year at the incoming outgoing meeting CDs will be exchanged, and for those who do not attend it is simple to mail a small disk.
Consequently as it is simpler to make changes there have been many revisions to terms of reference and of course at our AGM for the first time in years there will be proposed changes to L&B to be discussed.
There are many exciting things ahead for CANN and I am assured the new executive will have things well in hand. It is anticipated that the standards of practice will be reviewed and updated for 2008, our strategic plan is a fixed agenda item and of course not to forget the planning for the WFNN that is being held in Canada for 2009. However, I am sure that your president Wilma will keep you posted on these events in her report and address.
In closing, it has been wonderful being involved in CANN in such an active role. I have had such great opportunities to meet incredible people. The board members I have worked with have been tireless in their efforts to support CANN and indeed I think I will feel a wave of sorrow when January rolls around and for the first time in 6 years I will not be freezing my brain (as the meeting always seems to be held during the coldest weekend of the winter), and working non-stop at the midyear meeting. Best wishes to all who will be participating in that meeting next year. Indeed best wishes to CANN board and members over the next year and years to come.
Sincerely,
Patti G
