Ontario-West Chapter Mid Year Report

November 2011

Since my acceptance of the position of a councillor late June, we have experienced local tornados and an earthquake (unrelated to my acceptance!). My desk is now upright, I have found my computer and ready to proceed forward.

Our membership has remained close to previously reported numbers, i.e., 31 members. We have reviewed our survey that we launched in the spring to develop new strategy to increase membership. Recruitment and retention remains a challenge and we are determined to find new ways to overcome it.

In August 2011, one of our members hosted a summer BBQ, which was an excellent opportunity for fellowship and networking. It was a good time to be had by all who attended.

We held our annual Fall Update in October 2011. Despite the blitz of advertising, the attendance was lower than we expected—we had 33 registrants. A number of people indicated they were not aware of the event. As a result, we have discussed and will explore different ways of reaching potential participants.

Based on the previous year’s evaluations of what people were interested to learn about, some of the topics included were: Deep Brain Stimulation, Stem Cell Therapy in SCI, End-of-Life Care of the Child with the Brain Tumour, Multiple Sclerosis Update, Motivational Interviewing, Stroke Update, Management of Concussions. The verbal feedback received and the written evaluations were quite positive. The Education Committee is diligently planning for the Spring Update.

We have three known members due to recertify this year.
