Quebec Chapter Report
June 2010
Bonjour du Québec,
There are several highlights to report on behalf of the CANN Quebec chapter. In February, we organized an educational dinner event or Souper-conference that was very well-attended. The presentation, “Transition care for families with Multiple Sclerosis: Moving from the pediatric to the adult site” was given by 2 CANN members who are experts on this topic. Heather Davies is a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Pediatric Neurology at the MUHC-Montreal Children’s Hospital and Diane Lowden is a CNS in the adult MS program at the MUHC-Montreal Neurological Hospital (MNH). Among the door prizes, we offered a free membership to CANN for 1 lucky nurse; this was won by Diandra Zara, a new graduate working at the MNH. Congratulations, Diandra! We were happy to see that this event attracted not only CANN members but also other colleagues from the inter-professional pediatric neurology team. Many thanks to Tina Primiani for creating the excellent ice-breaker quiz and to Diane for her success in obtaining sponsorship for this informative and fun event.
In April, we held a CANN-sponsored lunch and Nursing Grand Rounds at the MUHC-MNH. Diane Lowden presented her research findings from the prestigious MUHC Eureka! Nursing Research fellowship entitled, “Decision-making for MS patients on treatment options”. More than 30 nurses were in attendance.
We are looking forward to the 41st CANN meeting in Quebec City, June 8-11. Quebec CANN members are contributing both posters and oral presentations and will receive financial support from CANN. The program has also attracted 5 Montreal Neuroscience nurses who will be attending their first CANN conference - we are sure they will be inspired by hearing about advances in Neuro nursing from across the country.
We send warm best wishes to CANN President for 2010-2011, Sandra Berubé. We miss you at our Montreal meetings since you moved to beautiful Quebec City but look forward to your mandate as President.
We also congratulate our colleague, Heather Davies, who was recently awarded a 1 year MUHC Eureka Fellowship in Nursing Research. The subject of her research will be, “Parental Perceptions of Transition Care for Young Adults with Complex Chronic Neurological Conditions and who have an Intellectual Impairment”.
Finally, I would like to warmly welcome the new Quebec CANN members who have joined in the past few months. We have several activities planned for the upcoming year and are thinking about fund-raising for next year’s 42nd CANN meeting in Vancouver!
Respectfully submitted,
Martha A. Stewart, RN, MSc(A), CNN(C)
