Research Committee Report

May 2010

A reminder letter about the Dr. Marlene Reimer Research Award was e-mailed to Secretary, Sandra Berube, for dissemination to members by the Councillors. The deadline for submissions of research proposals was October 2, 2009; and we received one proposal. The proposal was reviewed and approved by committee members.

I am most pleased to advise you of the 2010 recipient for the Dr. Marlene Reimer Research Award, Sonia Sarkissian Ph.D, APN, CNN(C), Clinician Scientist, Nursing; University Health Network, Toronto Western Hospital, Krembil Neuroscience Program. The title of her research is: Determinants of health promoting behaviours and quality of life in individuals with epilepsy. Sonia is also a highly respected board member and Editor of our journal, Canadian Journal of Neuroscience Nursing.

The Executive Board of Directors (BOD) voted at the mid-year meeting to determine the amount of research funding for the Dr. Marlene Reimer Research Award. The award will be $4,000. The BOD supports funding new neuroscience nurse researchers. This priority will be considered by members of the research committee in the selection of future award recipients.

I want to recognize the tremendous support and efforts of all Research Committee members: Marjorie Bowman, Donna Cousineau, Kathy Doerksen, Patti Gallagher, Debbie Holtom, Lynn Joseph, Wilma Koopman, Rosa Sourial, Sandra Boulton and Trish Haycock. Several subcommittees have been developed to work on goals of the strategic plan. This work began in the Spring 2010.

All CANN Research Award Recipients are listed on the website. Information about the city and province of the principal investigator, study title and amount of funding are posted. I would like to invite you to review this information and reflect on the rich history of CANN supporting neuroscience nursing research.

Lastly, I would like to thank all CANN members for the opportunity to have served as Research Chairperson for the past three years. It has been a wonderful learning experience and opportunity to meet many neuroscience nurses in Canada. I hope to remain a member of the research committee and will work closely with the new Chairperson to ensure a smooth transition.

With Kind Regards,
Andrea Fisher, RN, MSN, CNN(C)
Research Chairperson
