Scientific Committee Report

June 2010

Planning for the scientific aspect of the program as gone relatively smoothly this year. We are a smaller group planning at a distance, so were fortunate to have CANN members from across Canada assist us with abstract review, and we are very appreciative of their support. Every abstract was blind- reviewed by two committee members, and recommendations and comments were shared with the authors. It has been challenging to translate all of the conference information in a short period of time, and our CANN translation chair and Pappin Communications were very patient and supportive through this process. Their assistance was invaluable. As the conference is being held in Quebec City, every effort was made to ensure as many materials as possible are bilingual, so we are hoping to have conference delegates who will benefit from these efforts.

We had a total of 40 abstract submissions. One group had to withdraw after being accepted, and a substitute author was found in time to be placed in the program. We had three abstracts submitted in French, and were fortunate to have a bilingual author switch from the English to French tract in order to maximize our French content and offer a full afternoon to hopefully meet the needs of our Francophone colleagues. We also had 14 excellent poster submissions this year, but needed to decline two due to conference space limitations.

We did have only one application for the Medtronic Award. As funding is available, two other submissions that met criteria for the Brain Tumour Foundation Award and Codman Award were nominated by the committee to receive these awards, and the authors were given the option to proceed or not. All were very keen and all three awards will be offered this year as the authors have had their papers completed and accepted for publication to CJNN. Thank you to Sonia, our Editor, and the CJNN reviewers for facilitating this process.

We look forward to seeing you all in June and hope you enjoy the conference!

Respectfully submitted,
Janice Nesbitt
Scientific Chair
