SUMMARY:Caribbean Nurses Epilepsy Web conference
DESCRIPTION:Recognizing when a seizure becomes an emergency and administering rescue medications in a timely manner are essential to preventing the long-lasting adverse effects of prolonged seizure activity. Each person living with epilepsy should have an acute seizure action plan to give them and their families and caregivers a sense of control and confidence in recognising and responding to seizure emergencies. Nurses are positioned to play a critical role in educating patients\, families\, and caregivers about seizure emergencies\, rescue medications\, and mimics of seizure emergencies. Nurses are also vital to advocating for every person with epilepsy to have an acute seizure action plan and in collaborating with the rest of the team to complete individualized acute seizure action plans. \nDuring the Caribbean Nurses Epilepsy Web conference\, nurses will learn about seizure emergencies\, seizure emergency mimics\, rescue medications\, and acute seizure action plans. There will also be the opportunity to practice completing individualized acute seizure action plans. \nTopics and Speakers: \n\nWhat is a Seizure Emergency? — Dr. Bethany Thomas (USA)\nImitators of Seizure Emergencies — Dr. Paula Robertson (Trinidad and Tobago)\nSeizure Rescue Medications — Dr. Mishka Duncan-Adams (St. Vincent and the Granadines)\nTying it all together: Customizing Acute Seizure Action Plans — Dr. Lucretia Long (USA)\nAcute Seizure Action Plans Breakout Sessions — Moderators: Emy Lavoie (Canada)\, Allyson Palombaro (USA)\, Dr. Lucretia Long (USA)\, and Carmela Redhead (Canada)\n\nModerators: Michelle Phillip-Duncan (Trinidad and Tobago) and Carmela Redhead (Canada)
